While racist agitation is becoming increasingly acceptable in many circles of our society, the five musicians have made it their task to break down prejudices against people with a history of migration and flight and to make the richness of cultural diversity audible.
“For us, music is not free of politics! Since especially women of color are underrepresented in the music industry, we want to set a sign for emancipation and empowerment. That’s why we become hero:ins and are determined to stand up for a more just and fair society in our lyrics and sounds,” explains 32-year-old lead singer Jamila Al-Yousef, who put the band together in 2016 after returning from a magical concert by Erykah Badu and Hiatus Kaiyote in New York.

The band combines psychedelic rock with elements of funk and Arabic folklore. Percussionist Salam Alhassan, who fled Syria for Germany in 2015, brings both contemporary and folk musical influences from the Levant region, while guitarist Leon Sánchez has a Latin American musical background. Pier Caccio, raised in Italy and trained in LA, shows his magic on the drums, which are mainly influenced by Afrobeat music, while Felix Barth, who studied music in Amsterdam, provides the necessary groove with his bass lines. All five band members have one thing in common: their youth was strongly influenced by rock and hip-hop music.
To achieve their unusual sound, they draw inspiration from various musicians:inside such as Yasmine Hamdan, Aziza Brahim, Hiatus Kaiyote, Tony Allen, Novos Bahianos, Toot Ard and El Morraba3.
After four years of touring in Germany, the Middle East and North Africa (including Fusion Festival, Cairo Jazz Club, Rudolstadt Festival, Katerblau, YAAM, Kampnagel Hamburg, Schauspiel Hannover, Gorki Theater, Radialsystem, opening for BUKAHARA, Goethe Institute funded tours to Amman, Ramallah, Haifa and Tunis and Initiative Musik supported EGYPT Tour. ) JAMILA & THE OTHER HEROES 2020 manifested their concentrated live energy on the debut album SIT EL KON (The Grandmother of the Universe), funded by Initiative Musik, released on January 31, 2020 on the Springstoff label and celebrated with 500 visitors at YAAM.
